Paper for Calligraphy Practice

Smooth paper helps the nib move comfortably and can reduce feathering and bleeding. Paper weight is useful, but it does not guarantee good results with every ink.

What to look for

  • A smooth surface
  • Minimal feathering
  • Limited bleed-through
  • Comfortable nib movement
  • A size that fits your setup
  • Guide lines suitable for your writing

Do not judge paper by weight alone. Rhodia’s smooth 80 gsm paper can work well for practice, while heavier paper is not automatically bleed-resistant. Always test the actual paper with your chosen nib and ink.

Quick paper test

  1. Make a light line and an ink-rich line.
  2. Allow both to dry completely.
  3. Check the edges for feathering.
  4. Inspect the reverse side for bleed-through.
  5. Confirm that the nib moves without catching the surface.
