Create a small metallic calligraphy mixture with powder, gum arabic, and water. This page presents the Artful Hand Studio custom dip-pen method. Schmincke’s standard Aqua-Bronze instructions describe a separate water-based preparation, so follow the product label for general use.

Artful Hand Studio metallic ink recipe

  1. Add a small amount of metallic powder to a stable mixing dish.
  2. Add 3–6 drops of gum arabic.
  3. Mix thoroughly until smooth.
  4. Add water gradually, one drop at a time.
  5. Test with a dip nib on scrap paper.

During use

Metallic particles settle, so stir frequently. If the mixture does not flow, add one drop of water, mix, and test again. Use the mixture with a dip nib, not in a fountain pen, and clean the nib immediately after use.

Opaque colour

Gouache for Custom Ink

Gouache can be diluted in small quantities to create opaque custom colours for dip-pen calligraphy. Choose any colour according to your project and preference.

Basic mixing method

  1. Place a small amount of gouache in a mixing dish.
  2. Add clean water one drop at a time.
  3. Mix until completely smooth.
  4. Test the mixture with your nib.
  5. Adjust gradually until it flows without losing the opacity you want.

What to check

  • Smooth flow from the nib
  • Desired opacity
  • No visible lumps
  • Compatibility with the paper
  • Dry appearance and colour
  • Manufacturer information about permanence when relevant

Do not return a diluted mixture to the original container. Clean the nib and tools before the paint dries.
