Practise the ascender loop

The ascender loop appears in letters such as l and h. Practise it as a separate movement so the loop remains open and the shaded downstroke stays controlled.

A small practice sequence

  1. Use your guideline sheet to identify the baseline and ascender height.
  2. Make a light rising curve, turn smoothly at the top and bring the stroke downward with controlled pressure.
  3. Release the pressure as you approach the lower turn. Avoid forcing the nib around a tight curve.
  4. Repeat with space between examples. Compare the slant and the open space inside each loop.

Use the basic strokes library to study the movement, then apply it in the lowercase l lesson.
