Uppercase Y

Copperplate uppercase Y construction steps

The uppercase Y combines upper branching movement with a descending stroke.

The goal is balance between the upper arms and the lower stem. The descender should feel connected to the letter.

Keep the lower movement controlled and aligned.

Practice slowly and focus on five things:

  1. Keep the upper movement balanced.
  2. Control the center join.
  3. Pull the descender with steady pressure.
  4. Keep the lower curve narrow.
  5. Finish with a clean hairline.

If the Y looks too heavy at the bottom, reduce pressure and make the descender more controlled.
