Uppercase U

Copperplate uppercase U construction steps

The uppercase U is built from a tall downstroke, a smooth bottom turn, and a controlled return.

The goal is a clean, open shape with balanced spacing. The bottom should curve smoothly without becoming too wide.

Keep the letter upright and elegant.

Practice slowly and focus on five things:

  1. Start with a controlled entrance.
  2. Pull the shaded stroke steadily.
  3. Release before the bottom turn.
  4. Keep the lower curve smooth.
  5. Return with a clean hairline.

If the U looks pinched, open the bottom slightly. If it looks too wide, narrow the return stroke.
