Uppercase S

Copperplate uppercase S construction steps

The uppercase S is built from large curves and controlled direction changes.

The goal is rhythm. The upper and lower curves should balance each other without becoming too wide or too heavy.

Keep the shape readable before making it more expressive.

Practice slowly and focus on five things:

  1. Start with a smooth upper curve.
  2. Keep the center transition controlled.
  3. Balance the lower curve.
  4. Avoid heavy pressure in the wrong places.
  5. Finish cleanly.

If the S looks unstable, reduce the size and focus on the flow between the two curves.
