Uppercase L

Copperplate uppercase L construction steps

The uppercase L is built from a tall main stroke and a long lower flourish.

The goal is a clean vertical movement with a graceful base. The lower flourish should support the letter without becoming too heavy.

Keep the shaded stroke steady and the bottom curve light.

Practice slowly and focus on five things:

  1. Start with a controlled entrance.
  2. Keep the main shaded stroke straight.
  3. Release cleanly near the baseline.
  4. Extend the lower flourish smoothly.
  5. Avoid making the base too heavy.

If the lower flourish becomes too large, shorten it and focus on clean proportion.
