Uppercase J

Copperplate uppercase J construction steps

The uppercase J uses a long descending movement with a controlled curve.

The goal is to keep the stroke elegant and steady as it moves downward. The lower curve should feel smooth, not dragged or forced.

Take time near the turn so the lower curve remains clean.

Practice slowly and focus on five things:

  1. Start with a controlled upper movement.
  2. Pull the main stroke steadily downward.
  3. Release pressure before the lower curve.
  4. Keep the lower curve smooth.
  5. Finish with a light exit.

If the descender becomes too wide, reduce the curve and keep the stroke closer to the slant.
