Lowercase y

Copperplate lowercase y construction steps

The lowercase y belongs to the descender loop family.

It combines an upper movement with a descending loop. The goal is a controlled body, narrow loop, and clean hairline return.

The lower loop should feel connected to the letter, not like a decorative tail added afterward.

Practice slowly and focus on five things:

Connect the upper form into the loop without widening the descender.

  1. Keep the upper form stable.
  2. Pull into the descender with control.
  3. Release before the loop.
  4. Keep the loop narrow.
  5. Return with a clean hairline.

If the loop becomes too large, practice the descender stroke again before writing the full y.
