Lowercase w

Copperplate lowercase w construction steps

The lowercase w belongs to the compound curve family.

It is built from repeated pressure-and-release movements, similar to u and v. The goal is rhythm, spacing, and consistent inner spaces.

The w should not become too wide. Keep each part controlled and evenly spaced.

Practice slowly and focus on five things:

Repeat the movement evenly instead of stretching the letter too far.

  1. Keep each shaded stroke parallel.
  2. Release pressure before each turn.
  3. Keep the repeated parts even.
  4. Avoid making the letter too wide.
  5. Finish with a clean exit.

If the w loses rhythm, practice u and v again before returning to the full letter.
